I never thought I would see the day that we are more coruupt than a 3rd world country
I had interviews with Canadian Pacific Railroad and Canadian National Railroad. For a train conductor starting pay was $100,000. Union benefits. Union dues for the SIOUX union (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois) we’re $162 biweekly. On top the union benefits you have railroad retirement. IF you make it to retirement age in the railroad, your spouse gets the exact same retirement pension you do for literally doing nothing. You get a check in the mail and so does your wife for the exact same amount. The flip slide of the coin is you are on call 24/7 365 days a year. You have to live within 2 hours of your home terminal because when you get that call you have 2 hours to stop whatever your doing and get your butt to work. This could happen at 2am or during Christmas, or during your kids birthday. You work 12 hour days. Weather doesn’t matter. The freight matters. The railroad owns you. There’s your peek behind the curtain of the railroad industry. I had a job offer from CP. I turned it down because I wanted to be a dad and be home to watch my kid grow up. Now I’m in nursing school and am loving it. I don’t regret turning down the railroad.
