Amala, I am a mixed black woman who was born in the 1980s having grown up in a predominantly black area. I have experienced racism my entire life from black people; my own people. Rarely have I, encountered biases, or prejudice, from any other ethnic group. White people, with an exception of a few in my lifetime, have always been kind or gown out of their way to show kindness or lend a helping hand.
I work in the schools. One time I had to discipline a couple of 6th or 7th grade students, and one of them turned back to me and said, “You just did that because I’m black.” I said, “No, but you just said THAT to me because I’m white.” All the other students pointed at him and went, “Ohhhh!” He knew he was busted because his peers didn’t back him up. I then said, “You are never again going to play the race card in this space. Do you understand me?” He said yes and I had no more problems from him.
