I’ve worked several incidents with the U.S. Coast Guard. Their District Commanders are for the most part very professional and often assume the role of Incident Commander in emergencies such as this one. It is a tough job and not always free of political entanglements. Still, they usually do the right thing in the end and rarely get the credit that is due.
Like the politicians always say “Don’t let a tragedy go to waste.” They have tooled everything to their advantage.
