The anti-gun crowd is just beyond reason. You cannot talk to them.
I had been a police officer in one of the counties in the area of metro Atlanta for less than a year when the 1994 weapons ban went into effect. I saw no real positive impact from the ban and it was mostly an inconvenience for legitimate gun owners and users, including police officers. After retiring last year I can say that almost without exception, the firearms I saw used in crimes were low cost, more poorly made firearms. I saw ARs and AKs during a few drug busts and search warrants but almost never in the hands of people. I got shot at a few times; the closest was a .38 special from a smaller brand snubnose wielded by a suicidal older woman. The round went between my arm and rib cage, hit a neighboring house with no injury to anyone.
Of the firearms related deaths I saw, a majority were suicides.
